Everything Heals…. Even Discs

Spinal Discs are a big topic these days; just ask your family members, I bet a few will tell you that they’ve had herniated or blown discs in their spine.

While many people believe that Disc Injuries are some sort of life-sentence to be tortured periodically, emerging evidence is saying quite the contrary. As a matter of fact, pooled data from eleven studies suggest that 66% of non-surgically managed disc herniations actually heal. Surprisingly some of the most severe injuries, show the most significant changes suggesting that acute imaging studies (MRI and CT) give little information regarding the actual likelihood of healing.

Chiropractic stresses the innate recuperative healing potential of the body, understanding that we are in a constant state of turnover, that our body always seeks to maintain homeostasis, that we do so to the best of our ability given what we have to work with, and that healing occurs as an expression of the same intelligence which has guided our growth and development since conception. Are Spinal Discs some sort of mystic structure that the body can not heal? Of course not, although there are a few special considerations.

Spinal Discs in adults do not receive direct blood flow which limits their access to oxygen and nutrients necessary for healing, this is further compounded when the spine is subluxated and not moving optimally.

As a result, disc cells take a long time to turn-over and Heal after an injury. Think about it, if we cut ourselves our skin cells turn over in 5-10 days, when we break a bone it requires 4-6 weeks; every type of cell in our body has a predetermined time to turnover and Disc cells take the longest.

Most importantly, we can only work with what we’ve got. If we have poor nutrition we may not possess the building blocks needed to restore the relevant tissues. If we have more important issues going on, our body will direct its attention toward them first. Most importantly, if we have subluxations and are not CLEAR, our brain may not accurately perceive our injury, and may not be able to coordinate its healing in the most efficient manner possible.

While spinal disc injuries may change our approach to adjusting the spine, they do not change our objective or our recommendations. Everyone deserves to have a Nervous System which is fully functional and free from interference, and if we wish to live well and heal efficiently, we must be CLEAR, CONNECTED, and WELL ADJUSTED!

Chiropractic & Pregnancy

Pregnancy and birth are probably the greatest example of how amazing we really are. I’ve been more, and more in complete and total awe of the miracle of life because my wife, Rebecca, is currently 17 weeks pregnant. Every week as we research what changes are occurring and how our baby is growing, I am reminded that embryological and fetal development occur way beyond our conscious control.

No matter how much we manifest, plan, hope, dream, and wish we have zero control over gender, development, eye color, or which parts of the body will form before others. The truth is, despite our individual differences each and every one of us has followed exactly the same blueprint of development and growth. This Innate mechanism is coded so specifically within our DNA that it happens whether or not we’re even aware of it.

The process begins the instant a sperm fertilizes an egg, in that moment a Life-Force is present and multiple millennia of human history began replaying as 1 cell divides into 2, and from 2 to 4, and so on. All while being guided by this unseen force, long before most mothers are even aware that it’s happening. This process occurs while mom’s own body is changing to support the implantation of her embryo by developing a placenta, beginning to double her blood supply, and by nourishing the developing baby.

New life is so awesome, and so Innately Intelligent that just two weeks after conception our little embryo had developed clear brain regions, by week 5 its heart had begun beating, and by week seven was producing over 100 brain cells per minute!

So, Why Chiropractic?

Because Chiropractic is about supporting everything that is Innate and Right about us!

Since we only get one opportunity to transition from an embryo into a fetus, pregnancy is an opportune time to receive Chiropractic Care. Keeping free of spinal subluxations and nerve interference allows mom’s and baby’s Innate Intelligence to guide the development of a healthy new human being.

When moms remain well-adjusted through pregnancy their babies are free to move and turn so there are significantly fewer breech babies resulting in less cesarean sections and many women report less nausea, increased comfort throughout their pregnancy, and even shorter labor times while under Regular Chiropractic Care.

Our practice of Chiropractic is unique because we don’t seek to treat discomfort, but to restore and preserve the greatest expression of each and every individual’s innate capacity for optimal Health! Chiropractic acknowledges that our bodies were designed to be self-healing and self-regulating, and that interference with the transmission of information in our nervous system results in miscommunication much like interference does to your cell-phone reception.

I’m excited to share our journey as my wife’s pregnancy progresses, as we revere in the awesome power that resides within us all, and as we welcome our well-adjusted newborn into the Hands On Health community.

Tech-Neck

Technology moves at an astounding rate; it seems as though each month there is a new App, an Update, or a Faster Better Device. However, as we chase the Next, Best, New thing we rarely stop to think about the toll that our bodies are incurring.

  • What happens to our Eyes when we stare at the screen for too long?
  • How does all the high definition movement stimulate our Brain?
  • What type of changes are we going to see in our hands, wrists, and thumbs from typing?
  • What about our Neck?

I don’t mean to pick on Pokemon, but the current phenomenon illustrates an extremely relevant point. Our constant connection to technology has an effect on our overall health! A 2014 study from the Surgical Technology International Journal found that minor changes to our head and neck posture result in significant forces being imparted on our spine. These findings are so staggering that when forward head posture reaches 60 degrees, it’s as if the head weighs an additional 60 lbs!

Essentially, our technology is becoming a Significant Source of Stress effecting a multitude of normal, natural physiologic functions.

Don’t believe me? The same study concluded that these changes have a DIRECT impact on Serotonin Levels, Testosterone Levels, Energy, and inflammatory substances like Cortisol…. But How? Let’s Review:

Stress (using technology) results in changes in Spinal Alignment (Subluxations) which irritate Nerves directly impacting the way our body Functions. The longer interference is present, the greater the effect. This may manifest as an illness, ache, pain, degenerative process, low lab level, or in many other ways.

Chiropractors understand this relationship and adjust the spine to maintain proper posture and alignment, keep the nervous system free of interference, and allow your body to function as it was intended to. In our technology-dominant culture it has become increasingly important that every individual be checked for Spinal Subluxations BEFORE an unpleasant symptom grabs our attention.

After all, it is much easier to keep the wheel balanced, then it is to bend and mold it back into alignment….

Chiro-Kids

Many of us understand that our children are our future, and most parents will do whatever is within their means to assure that their little ones have the greatest possible potential for success. At Hands On Health in Brick, New Jersey, we say that when it comes to getting checked for subluxations, kids are our MOST Important Clients!

Let’s start at the beginning; we know that Subluxations form as the result of STRESS. But shouldn’t a child’s life be relatively stress-free? Even though our offspring aren’t worrying about paying bills or making dinner their existence is not devoid of stress. For many of us, it begins with birth. Did you know that average nearly-newborns encounter up to 120 pounds of pressure distributed across their head and neck as they enter the world? Furthermore, the world that a newborn enters is a dramatic departure from the womb that they’ve been inhabiting; there are bright lights, changing temperatures, gravity, and even the need to breathe for themselves.

As children age and mature their stresses become slightly more familiar to us. Most of us would agree that there is a normal degree of bumps and bruises as we grow and develop. Did you know that children fall hundreds of time before they learn to walk?  Do you think that these very “normal” tumbles impact and affect their developing skeletal system?

Science has confirmed that proper spinal alignment and motion generates a multitude of neurological stimulation affecting multiple parts of the Brain. When subluxations develop and the spine stops moving properly the flow of this information ceases resulting in autonomic nervous system imbalance and the nerves in our body being exposed to undue pressure and irritation.

Due to the nature of growth and adolescence, a young person’s rate of cellular turnover is much greater than yours or mine. This means that they have the ability to Heal Faster, Adapt Quicker, and tend to be slightly more pliable while their bodies develop. Essentially kids handle their stress better than adults do largely because their bodies are designed to experience it. Despite this, young people are not immune to the effects of Subluxations. Actually, this is WHY we say that kids are our most important clients.

Health and growth occur through the processes of cellular regeneration and proliferation, both of which are controlled and coordinated by the brain and nervous system, so it is pertinent that these structures remain CLEAR and FREE from interference. By maintaining an accurate flow of information between the brain and the body we give our children the tools to maximize their potential for health, healing, growth, development, maturation, and life.

We only get one opportunity to develop from a child into an adult; why not assure that the process occurs with as little interference as possible? Have your entire family checked for subluxations regularly to assure their continued development and optimal expression of LIFE!

Everyone Benefits from Chiropractic Care - Even Chiropractors!

We strongly believe in making regular chiropractic care a sustainable investment in your future because it’s the same care that we recommend to our friends, families, and especially ourselves. As many of my clients know, I have been a Chiropractic client since birth, and continue to get checked weekly for subluxations to assure my continued development, and to moderate the effects of stress before issues arise.

Some people find Chiropractic as a last resort, others as part of a care-regiment; maybe being referred from another provider, but the true benefits of regular care go far beyond the resolution of numbness, back pain, headaches, or some other condition. While it is true that precise spinal adjustments restore biomechanical integrity, increase mobility, reduce inflammation, and help things heal it is important to recognize most issues develop over time and the unpleasant symptom which gets our attention is actually a signal of distress as our body attempts to alert us that something’s wrong.

Chiropractic is really all about the Nervous System. Science tells us that our nerves are responsible for everything that our body does. An inability of any nerve to carry information from the brain to the body is called paralysis, quite literally it means that if a nerve stops working so does that region of the body.

But what happens when a nerve is kind-of working?

What if it’s only conducting 50% of the signal? Would the body work at 50%? What would that be like? How would we know? When we respond to stress of various forms by developing Spinal Subluxations the result is pressure, tension, and irritation to nervous tissue. Whether we realize it or not, this affects the ability of any nerve to carry information, and ultimately affects the way our body will function. That may result in a muscle spasm, a digestive sensitivity, or slightly greater susceptibility to illness. We have no way of telling how or what 1 Vertebral Subluxation may affect, but we know the effects will only increase as time goes on. Inevitably, the reduced function will be perceived as pain, symptom, illness, or disease and we’ll generally seek treatment.

I get checked and adjusted every week whether I have an ache or pain or not. I want to be sure that my body is free of interference and working to continually adapt, heal, and keep me functioning as well as possible for as long as possible.

In many cases the greatest Chiropractic Testimonials are the ones that never get recorded. The Allergies that never develop, the Illness that never occurs, and all the Healthy Kids who grow and develop without interference; just as they were intended to.

What are Spinal Nerves?

Our bodies possess over 45 Miles of Nerves! We generally categorize them into two parts: our Central Nervous System, and our Peripheral Nervous System. The central Nervous System consists of our Brain and Spinal Cord both of which are so important that our bodies have surrounded them with bone for protection. Our Brain being encased within our skull, and our Spinal cord floating ever so gently down the center of our spine. Our Peripheral Nervous System consists of every other nerve cell within our bodies.

Our Spinal Nerves branch directly off of our Spinal Cord and pass through the spaces in between the vertebrae of our Spine. These 31 pairs of nerves represent the physical link between the two major parts of our nervous system! Take a moment to consider the fact that each and every time we experience the breeze on our face, the touch of a loved one, or even the sting of discomfort; our Spinal Nerves carry that information from our body to our spinal cord, and in an instant it is conducted to our brain where we integrate and understand what’s going on.

More importantly, each and every time our bodies do something like move a muscle, digest our dinner, or even change our blood pressure our spinal nerves are at work! When our Brain receives information it responds in the most appropriate manner sending a signal back down our spinal cord, through a spinal nerve, and off to the region of the body that is intended to receive it.

But How?

Our Nervous system is HIGHLY organized, it needs to be in order to process all of the information that it does. Some of our nerves only carry sensory information from our body in and up to our brain, others exclusively carry output from the brain down and out to the different parts of our bodies. However, certain nerves, like our Spinal Nerves, carry both; even though different types of signals are generated by different types of receptors, and are carried to different parts of the brain and/or body. Take a look at the cross-sectioned picture of a Spinal Nerve below. In the center is a blood vessel, and surrounding it are many round bundles of Nerve Tissue. These bundles are like lanes on a highway carrying different types of information to and from different places, at different speeds. Some sense pressure, others perceive touch, others may innervate a hamstring, colon, or even detect how far a tendon is being stretched.

Chiropractic keep your Nervous System FREE and CLEAR of interference so every bit of information that it processes can be transmitted to its intended destination quickly, clearly, and accurately allowing every part of our body to work exactly how it is intended to!

What do The Clash, Chiropractic, & Black Sabbath have in common?

Terry Chimes, that’s what!

“During my time in music, I saw how people’s health was determined by their lifestyle.”

At age 19, Terry Chimes began playing music with Mick Jones and Paul Simonon, within a year they merged with Joe Strummer and Keith Levine to form The Clash, changing the course of Rock, Punk, and popular culture. However, it wasn’t until he was touring with Black Sabbath in 1987 that Terry was introduced to his lasting purpose; Chiropractic.

Much like Dr. Tyler White, Terry understands that Chiropractic in, its essence, is very much a punk-rock, revolutionary approach to Health and Life! From its inception in 1895 the practice of Chiropractic has never been intended as an alternative or rival to conventional medical care. Conversely, the unique philosophy of Chiropractic, the preservation of health and facilitation of optimal performance in all domains of Life, is drastically different from the pharmaceutically based and symptom-centered treatment protocols which permeate our culture.

“I have another life now, standing up against massive corporations who want to ruin everyone’s health and make money out of it, whether with genetically-modified foods, sugar-laden rubbish, or drugs we don’t really need.”

Terry is a long time vegetarian, and lives a Drug and Alcohol Free lifestyle. He retired from music in 1989 to attend Bournemouth Anglo-European College of Chiropractic, worked in China, London, and has been operating his own practice in Essex since 1993.

In addition to his practice Terry currently plays drums with The Crunch, supports multiple charities, coaches developing chiropractors and small business owners, is an author, and a public speaker. “People say to me: Don’t you miss playing in front of 70,000 people? Well, I’ll probably see 70,000 patients before I die. Getting people well and making them happy: I don’t think I’ll ever want to stop doing that.”
