Take a Breath

     Take a breath because this is something you may want to hear. Current Rrsearch has shown that proper breathing can be an appropriate approach for managing chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, stress and other ailments.  Each one of us takes about 20,000 breaths a day. Unfortunately, the influence of breathing on human health goes largely unnoticed. Only a few people realize that shallow breathing is linked to stress, sub-par mental performance, fatigue and increased risk of heart disease. Fortunately, breathing correctly will be able to release tension and improve your physical and mental wellness.
     Pay attention to the way you breathe it just may be one of the most important things you can do for your health. A recent study from St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center even suggests that a controlled breathing at a slowed rate can significantly reduce feelings of pain. You can reverse your body's natural reaction to stressful situations by practicing deep breathing exercises. When you breathe slowly and consciously, your body reacts in many positive ways. Without oxygen there is no life. It is a necessary component of life force and an invaluable aid to peak performance, life extension and perfect health.
     Are you getting enough of it?  If not here are some simple breathing exercises:  Be free from distractions for at least 10 minutes.  Inhale for 6 seconds, count to 18, then exhale for 12 seconds; then repeat this process for at least 10 breaths twice a day or more! Better breathing has been documented to help with Lowering Blood Pressure, Removing Emotional Stress and Tension, Improving Sleep, Raising Energy, Improving Circulation, Salt Metabolism, Promoting Weight Loss, and Improving Athletic Performance.  Are you getting enough breath? Are You Healing? Or Are You Just Suppressing Disease?

Anyone who has ever eaten an aspirin certainly knows that there is a big difference between pain relief and being healthy enough to promote true healing. Even though a painkiller may help you "feel better" it is widely understood that this relief does not necessarily mean that anything has been cured or that any healing has actually taken place.

However, I am regularly astounded by how many people truly believe that various drugs and conventional approaches have performed some type of miracle by providing short-term relief of pain or discomfort. Little do many people know that when a drug works, it may be at the cost of suppressing the body's natural response to the disease, thereby creating a much more serious physical and/or mental disease.

Although antibiotics and other drugs may be an exception to this general observation, getting rid of an infection will not influence the immune factors that led the person to become susceptible to said infection in the first place. In fact, antibiotics are known to disrupt one`s inner ecology, disturbing many biological processes such as the assimilation of nutrients, and antibiotics even tend to make the individual more susceptible to new infection.

Painkillers, on the other hand, may provide great reduction in discomfort, but this relief may result in the person continuing to walk on that injured ankle inevitably causing increased injury while feeling the numbing effects of the pharmaceutical industry. A person with arthritis, as another very relevant example, while they may continually find relief by taking one or more painkilling drugs, these drugs also create their own issues like increased tolerance, addiction, or pathology, all of which usually lead to much more serious health problems.

What people don't understand is that there may be a danger in the frequent or recurrent application of treatments to suppress symptoms. The concept of suppressing symptoms is well accepted and understood in psychology. It is commonly observed when a person suppresses his or her emotions, such actions tend to push the emotional turmoil deeper, leading the person to explode at some future time (often at people who are not directly related to the origin of the person`s problem).

While people may be familiar with the problems associated with the suppression of emotions, people are generally not familiar with the possibility that many conventional medical treatments can suppress their physical symptoms, driving the disease in deeper. However, suppression of disease has become such commonplace in today's world of medical treatment that it is virtually ignored.

Doctors and drug companies tend to minimize the real problems of suppressing the disease process by referring to the "side effects" of a drug, yet, pharmacologists commonly note that the determining of a drug`s "Direct Effects" and its "Side Effects" are completely arbitrary. They are both the direct effect of the drug(s) on the human body.

Ironically, many conventional drugs are touted specifically for their ability to suppress symptoms or even suppress the body's own immune system. Ultimately, pushing the disease deeper into the person as a result of using pharmacological agents that are explicitly prescribed for their ability to control or inhibit symptoms. What we fail to consider is that these symptoms are the natural defensive functions of the body and suppression of disease while it may provide some semblance of benefit, it ultimately makes the person much sicker. Such suppression of the disease process may lead to increased chronic disease, immune dysfunction, and mental illness, all of which have become seen in epidemic proportions in our elderly populations.

As a Chiropractor, I recognize that true healing comes from within each of us. Our bodies are constantly regenerating themselves. Did you know that you make 2.5 million Red Blood Cells every second? We're all familiar with the fact that we replace skin cells and hair regularly, but that is happening on a deeper level every second of our lives. The bottom line is that the healthier we are the better all of these processes, and countless others, can be carried out. It is only after we reach a state disrepair that physical signs and symptoms begin to develop and illness ensues, it is at this point that most people feel that something is wrong or that they've "Lost" their health! The reality however is quite the contrary; the body becomes ill when the balance shifts from regeneration and healing to degeneration and biological decay.  We need very few things to maintain our Health; Rest, Good Water, Nutrient Packed Organic Whole Foods, and a Clear Nervous System so our brain can keep everything working the way it’s intended to!

Improving Health With Music

I would like to share a very interesting article which I read this morning from Natural News. The article was on the topic of Improving One's Overall Health with Music. The first recorded experiments with music were conducted by Dorothy Retallack on plants at Colorado Women's College from 1968-1973. Since then, numerous studies have been conducted producing similar results. Then, doctor's Katherine Creath and Gary Schwartz published a study in which they aimed to determine that even seedlings are affected by the vibrational energy of music and psychic healing energies.  The results mimicked that of earlier studies; plants which were exposed to both Western and Eastern variations of Classical Music grew better than those which were not exposed. Furthermore, plants exposed to harsh or heavy music did not grow as well. The researchers even documented that the plants being studied would actually lean toward the classical music just as they would lean toward the sun.

Plants have not been the only subjects of such studies though. In 1991, a book entitled a Pourquoi Mozart revealed 30 years of positive results that came from exposing Learning Disabled Children to the music of Mozart.  While experts are still debating how much of a difference music makes, the majority agrees that music is more beneficial to toddlers than television is. England and the US have both recorded a 30% decrease in normally high crime areas after piping calm music into public places.

This isn't too far fetched when we recognize that we are all vibrational beings composed of millions of vibrating atoms resulting in a metaphysical aura, more frequently referred to as our "Personal Space" which radiates from us in 360 degrees for as long as we live.  By understanding this it is easy to conjure up that sound waves have the ability to interact with these vibrational waves of energy by both harmonious and dissonant wave interactions.

Have you ever heard of the expression of, "Being on the same wavelength?"As it turns out, there may be a real basis for that and sound waves produced by music are just one of the very real things that can affect this. Furthermore, it is well recognized that enjoying Classical Music can be like training wheels for meditation. Great composers like Bach produce such intricate compositions that listening carefully to the subtle changes and isolated instrumentation can serve as a great step to letting go of the Mental Chatter that can frequently occupy our days while allowing us to experience higher consciousness.

Think of Beethoven, a deaf composer. He wrote his entire late catalog with a diminishing sense of hearing, working purely on his knowledge of  music and resulting vibrations of his compositions. Some of the most well regarded music in recorded history has been composed purely by vibration and has produced an endless array of emotions for centuries!

The Secret & Keeping Connected to the Universe!

How many of you have seen The Secret? It has been gaining a lot of popularity over the course of the last few years, and deals primarily with the connection between each of us and the universe. I understand Universal Intelligence to coordinate the constant forces at work on our planet. Forces such as gravity, atomic forces of attraction, and even our inherent capacity to coordinate 2 very different cells into a living breathing self-regulating organism are all personifications of the coordinating energy that allows life to exist on our solitary rock with in the vastness of space.

The film deals primarily with ways that we as individuals can better connect to the forces of the universe in order to manifest changes in our lives be them physical, emotional, or spiritual. Have you ever had something happen just as you've needed it? Was this mere coincidence or was there more to it? What if there are ways to enhance or keep patent our connections to the Universe? Well that is the exact topic of this week's post. I recently read some very interesting and sensible suggestions on doing just that, and I'd like to share them with you:

First off, we will discuss foods and substances that interfere or cloud our consciousness and connection:
  • Meat Products - especially those produced by conventional methods are riddled with chemicals, hormones, and antibiotics which cloud the clarity of the mind.  Not to mention the amount of Stress-Hormones that are released as animals are corralled and lined up for death while witnessing the extermination of their peers.  These Aggressive, Panicked, neurotransmitters are released directly into the blood and infused with the muscular tissue that most of the world consumes.
  • Drugs (including Alcohol) - Impair the Nervous System, and initiate a cascade of neurotransmitters which alter our perception and internal environment.  Nicotine, Alcohol, Pharmaceuticals, and even medicinal herbal approaches including Kava Kava, Medicinal Marijuana, and Valerian Root alter the body's natural balance of Hormones, and Neuro-transmitters in order to produce the various effects that they do.  While many substances may be used positively as a natural safe alternative to the Doctor's Recreational Chemistry; it is important to keep in mind that while producing a desired effect, these substances are what's initiating the change in perception.
  • Caffeine - Caffeine artificially stimulates the body while also altering perception.  Repetitive caffeine stimulation leaves the body fatigued straining one's relationship with the universe.  
  • Television - Watching TV exposes us to an onslaught of propaganda, advertisements, and mind numbing sensory stimulation.  Furthermore, maintaining a relationship with one's favorite shows while maintaining a nightly personal program schedule not only decreases an individual's relationship with nature but promotes anti-social behavior making people more comfortable on the couch than in a conversation.  As a result television tends to fill our heads with ideas about products which promote corporate interest while numbing our intention.
  • Processed Foods - Not only do precessed foods lack the nutrients to maintain a healthy nervous system and body they promote a sedentary lifestyle, and microwave "cooked" - plastic wrapped GMO concoctions which take numerous tolls on the environment. Processed foods are also frequently LOADED with excitotoxins like MSG and aspartame which poison us and stimulate the nervous system to extinction.  Trying to digest processed foods is actually more of a stress than a benefit.
  • Fragrance Products - Most fragrances are manufactured with toxic chemicals. Many of these substances bombard the structures responsible for the sense of smell. This limits the body's sensory acuity resulting in an unrealistic perception of the individual's environment.  Furthermore, many of these chemicals present a chemical stress to the body ultimately affecting the overall function of everything. These products include most body care products, laundry detergent, cosmetics, deodorants, and much more. There are numerous alternatives for all of these products, which are manufactured with natural smells that actually stimulate the nose rather than desensitize it.
  • Processed Sugar - The way artificial sweeteners affect the body is similar to crack.  It stimulates the body to release a cascade of hormones totally altering perception of feeling by stimulating the same hormones as Ecstasy, Psychedelics, and Cocaine.  Remember regardless of the stimulus, alterations in perception are effective due to the manipulation of your body's natural balance of hormones and neuro-transmitters. While all this manipulation can be achieved by all of the above, it can also be affected by positive forces such as meditation effectively increasing one's connection with the Universe. Processed sugars include white refined sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, dextrose, sucrose, and others. Processed Flour and white breads function very similarly.
  • Aspertame - While this is an artificial sweetener and has been mentioned already it's so dangerous and toxic that it gets its own bullet point. Aspartame literally causes death of nervous tissue as it breaks down into formaldehyde and wood ether. It is frequently found in Gum and Diet Products.
I know this is all very disconcerting, with all these negative stresses clogging our connection with our environment what is one to do? Well the following are ways to clear the communication not only within the body but beyond!
  • Organic Raw Foods - These provide the body with fuel, minerals, and the substances it needs to maintain its self.  Drinking fresh raw food juice greatly increase clarity and nutrition.  Adhering to a Raw Food diet will result in dramatic positive effects on your health.  See my previous post about celebrities who have changed their lives with Raw Foods.
  • Vegetarian Foods - Avoiding Meat and Dairy stagnate the flow of energy throughout the body taking days to digest and pass.  Some of the largest animals and oldest cultures on the planet have survived on vegetarian diets for centuries!
  • Acting With Integrity - This brings harmony not only within the individual, but with the universe as well.  How clearly do you think that the universe can receive your intention if your actions are speaking a different language? 
  • Clean Water - Hydration is a BIG deal.  We are composed of roughly 80% water, and since every atom in our being is resonating, as is described by quantum physics it is very important to amplify that reverberation into the universe through a well hydrated body. Aside form that water is ESSENTIAL in maintaining a health nervous system.
  • Super Foods - Super foods include Micro-Algae, Bee Pollen, Acai, Gogi and more. Many of these foods have long been revered by native cultures for their inherent highly dense nutrition.  If nature has bequeathed these foods with dense positive attributes why not bring that power of nature into yourself?
  • Healthy Oils - healthy oils serve as a primary source of Omega 3 fats otherwise known as "The Good Fats." These substances are necessary to manufacture cholesterol which our bodies need to repair arteries as well as assemble almost all of our hormones.  Furthermore, we use these fats to manufacture the outermost covering of nerves which is responsible for the speed of certain nervous messages. Good natural sources of Omega 3's are Hemp, Chia, Flax seeds, Raw Coconut Oil, Avocado, and good quality cold processed fish oil.
  • Meditation - Meditation is perhaps the most effective way to "Tune In" to the universe. Of course the effectiveness of meditation is enhanced as all of the above strengthen and clarify the mind's capacity to communicate not only with other individuals, but with other vessels of Universal Intelligence.
  • Chiropractic - I feel that this is perhaps the most important tool in increasing our capacity for universal communication.  Chiropractic maintains open communication between the brain and the body, by keeping the spine clear of vertebral subluxtions. It has been shown that when vertebra are misaligned they can decrease a nerve's capacity to carry information by up to 60% in only 20 minutes.  Think about what happens when you cut off 60% of the water to a garden.  Now replace the garden with the endless anatomical structures that receive impulses from your brain every second.

We don't need to be bogged down with unpleasant symptoms to appreciate our health and I believe that living healthier means experiencing less unpleasant symptoms.
